Experts Answer: When Veganism Started? – Vegan4K.com

When Veganism Started?

I am really interested in the origins of veganism. I want to know when it started. I know it began with people eating only plant foods, but I am looking for information about how long this has been around. Also, was there ever a time when vegans did not exist, or has the word just become more popular?

While plant-based diets have been around for centuries, the modern vegan movement emerged in the mid-20th century. The concept of veganism as we know it today, which involves avoiding all animal products for ethical, environmental, and health reasons, was popularized by The Vegan Society in the UK in 1944. From there, the movement spread across the world and has continued to gain momentum in recent years.
