What Is Vegan Leather?

I have a question about vegan leather. I was wondering if anyone knew what it was and where it comes from. I read an article about vegan leather that said it’s made from trees, but I don’t know where it’s made or how. Is it just wood pulp? I’d like to make some vegan leather shoes for my dog.

Vegan leather is produced without the use of animals. There are several technologies that can produce such material, such as various forms of polyurethane; some companies produce similar material from wheat straw or cork might also be used for some types of cheaper vegan leather.

Wikipedia says that “vegan leather does not contain any animal-based materials, nor are processed using any products derived from animals”. It’s sometimes made to look like the real thing using techniques like pebbling or embossing giving it a porous or spongy texture, glossiness, and even coloration with dyes that match hides typically found in mass-market products.

Vegan leather is derived from synthetic materials, but some manufacturers still use a gelatine-based process to make it look a bit more like animal hide. It’s not the same as real leather, but it has all the benefits of being environmentally friendly and cruelty free!

The next time you’re wondering if something is vegan or not, just check the label! Most products today will have a “vegan” option available. And if they don’t, just get in touch with them on Facebook or Twitter and they’ll be so happy to help out with your request! 🙂

Basically anything that is an animal skin substitute can be called vegan leather.
